Title:                       TIME OUT FAN

 

Grade Level:          Pre-K – 2

 

Objectives:            Fine motor skill development, to enhance language skills, cognitive thinking, creativity, following directions, and self-control.

 

Materials:              Construction paper (5 x5”)

                                Craft sticks

                                Markers

Glue

                               

Procedure:             1.             Talk to the children about emotions:  Emotions are normal.  Everyone has               them.                                                    The way we react to our emotions can get us into trouble.  Here is one way to  

                                                “COOL DOWN” when your emotions try to control you.

2.                    Ask the children to draw a shape on the paper and decorate it.

3.                    Cut it out and glue it to the craft stick to create a fan.

 

Variation:               Combine with the Shaving Cream Puffy Paints to create a sunny day with clouds fan or a dark cloudy, rainy day fan.

 

                                To make Shaving Cream Puffy Paint:

                                Combine equal amounts of shaving cream and white craft glue

                                Add food color or washable tempera paint for color

                                Stir gently and apply with a craft stick

Evaluation:            Let the children play act different scenes that may make them angry.  Encourage them to go get their fans and cool off.  They don’t always have to be told how to make good choices.  They know how to make good choices.  Ask them to calm down by taking a deep breath and counting to ten while fanning themselves.  This may lead students to a discussion about how fans are used in some cultures.
