Title:                       COLOR THEORY – Stained Glass Butterfly

Grade Level:          Pre-K – 6

Objectives:            Fine motor skill development, creativity, follows directions

Materials:              Black construction paper

                                White pencil/crayon

                                Butterfly pattern

                                Waxed paper

                                Multicolored square tissue paper pieces

                                Glue/Elmer or white craft glue

Preparation in advance:

1.                    Trace and cut out 2 butterfly shapes for each child.

2.                    Tear off sheets of waxed paper large enough for the butterfly shape to fit on, with at least an extra 1” excess on all 4 sides.

3.                    It is important not to use an excessive amount of glue.  Too much glue may cause the colors to run, it may cause the paper to wrinkle and it will delay the drying time.

Procedure:             1.             Cover table with newspaper

2.                    Give each child a piece of waxed paper, glue and a butterfly shape.

3.                    Using dots cover one side of the butterfly shape, then center the shape on the waxed paper and press it onto the waxed paper.

4.                    Turn the waxed paper over so that the butterfly is on the underside of the waxed paper.

5.                    Using dots of glue, glue the multicolored tissue squares onto the waxed paper inside the butterfly shape, overlapping the colors slightly.  Make sure that the color goes to the outer edge of the wings.

6.                    When the butterfly is completely covered with the tissue paper, glue the 2nd butterfly shape on top of the tissue paper.  Align it to match the 1st butterfly shape.

7.                    Allow it to dry overnight.

8.                    Cut along the outside edge of the butterfly.

9.                    Hang the butterfly in the windows to enjoy the stained glass colors.

Evaluation:            Discuss the designs made; discuss the process used to create new colors.
