Title:                       Puzzle Holiday (Christmas tree) Ornaments

 

Grade Level:          Pre-K – 6

 

Objectives:            Fine motor skill development, creativity, follows directions

 

Materials:              Tag board

                                Aprons or smocks

                                Paint, acrylic (spray paint for adult use only)

                                Paint brushes

                                Puzzle pieces

                                Glue/Elmer or white craft glue

                                Glitter

                                Sequins

Hole punch

                                Ribbon

 

Preparation in advance:

1.                    Precut ornament shapes: trees, wreaths

2.                    Have the children discuss their holiday traditions.  Play appropriate holiday music.                             

 

Procedure:             1.             Cover table with newspaper

2.                    Give each child a precut ornament

3.                    Give the children an assortment of puzzle pieces to glue onto the ornament shape.

4.                    Allow the glue to dry before painting.

5.                    Protect the children’s clothing with aprons or smocks, especially if using acrylic paint.  Spray paint should only be used by an adult and sprayed outdoors for proper ventilation.

6.                    Allow the paint to dry before adding the sequins or glitter with glue.

7.                    Punch a hole for the ribbon to hang the ornament.

8.                    Label with the child’s name and date.

 

Evaluation:            Discuss the designs made; discuss holiday traditions.
