Title:                       Folded Paper Painting with string

 

Grade Level:          Pre-K – 6

 

Objectives:            Fine motor skill development, color recognition, creativity, matching, following directions

 

Materials:              White paper

                                Washable tempera

                                Paint brush

                                Yarn or heavy string

                                Newspaper

 

Procedure:             1.             Cover the table with newspaper

2.                    Fold the white paper in half

3.                    Drip small puddles of paint onto ½ of the paper

4.                    Place a long piece of string on top of the paint, in a random pattern, leaving the end on the outside of the paper

5.                    Fold the paper closed and place one hand on top of the paper

6.                    Pull the string out from the paper with the other hand, moving the hand from top to bottom

7.                    Open the paper to discover a double design

8.                    Add other details after deciding what it looks like to you

 

Variation:               Use scissors to cut paper into shapes such as a butterfly, heart, or circle before applying the paint.

 

Evaluation:            Discuss the creation of the artwork.  What does it look like, what do you see, a flower? A bird? A cat?  Display the projects with descriptions. Remark on the variations of colors/different results created by using the same materials.  Each one is different and beautiful just like the student who made it.
