Title:                       COLOR MIXING WITH Q-TIPS

 

Grade Level:          Pre-K – 6

 

Objectives:            Fine motor skill development, creativity, color theory

 

Materials:              White Paper

                                Watercolors,

                                Examples of Seurat's Pointillism technique

 

Procedure:            1.              Have the students prepare the watercolors by wetting only the RED, YELLOW,

                                                and  BLUE paints.

2.                    Review color Theory:  R+Y=O, R+B=P, Y+B=G

3.                    Using the Q-tips, place the tip into the color and make a dot of color on the paper.  Do not rub the q-tip from side to side, just touch the end to the paper to create a dot of color.

4.                    Make a row of dot in the same color, leaving a slight empty white space between the dots. Ex: Red.

5.                    Change q-tips and select a second color and make a row of dots next to but not touching the first row. Ex: Yellow.

6.                    The eye should blend the 2 colors optically to create a new color. Ex: Orange.

7.                    Make another set of color row dots using a different color combination. Ex: Red and Blue to create Purple.

8.                    Repeat. Ex: Blue and Yellow to create Orange.

9.             Now create a picture using the combination of colors to optically blend and create the new colors. Ex: a garden of Orange and Purple flowers and Green leaves and stems.

 

Evaluation:            Discuss how the colors were used to create the new colors.  What colors did they use to express their feelings?
