Title: COLOR MIXING WITH Q-TIPS
Grade Level: Pre-K – 6
Objectives: Fine motor skill development, creativity, color theory
Materials: White Paper
Watercolors,
Examples of Seurat's Pointillism technique
Procedure: 1. Have the students prepare the watercolors by wetting only the RED, YELLOW,
and BLUE paints.
2. Review color Theory: R+Y=O, R+B=P, Y+B=G
3. Using the Q-tips, place the tip into the color and make a dot of color on the paper. Do not rub the q-tip from side to side, just touch the end to the paper to create a dot of color.
4. Make a row of dot in the same color, leaving a slight empty white space between the dots. Ex: Red.
5. Change q-tips and select a second color and make a row of dots next to but not touching the first row. Ex: Yellow.
6. The eye should blend the 2 colors optically to create a new color. Ex: Orange.
7. Make another set of color row dots using a different color combination. Ex: Red and Blue to create Purple.
8. Repeat. Ex: Blue and Yellow to create Orange.
9. Now create a picture using the combination of colors to optically blend and create the new colors. Ex: a garden of Orange and Purple flowers and Green leaves and stems.
Evaluation: Discuss how the colors were used to create the new colors. What colors did they use to express their feelings?
