What's a Developmental Student?

Part II

Here are three more characteristics of many developmental students:

1. Poor time management skills (wasted time, procrastination, inability to plan)
These students may:
  • watch TV rather than studying
  • lose track of assignments
  • sign up for an unrealistic class load
  • hand in messy, unchecked work
  • hand in work that was done five minutes before class
  • do homework for another course instead of listening in class
  • have difficulty juggling family life, friendships, jobs, and college work

2. Social immaturity (communication difficulties, hostility to authority figures, narcissism)
These students may:
  • display a "me first" attitude
  • speak in words or phrases rather than sentences
  • be unable to articulate complex ideas
  • disrupt group activities
  • interrupt the instructor
  • react emotionally to problems rather than seeking a solution
  • view the instructor as an adversary
  • spend little time in self-examination
  • have difficulty with impulse control
